The Goblin Diaries, Volume 1

(From the July 21, 2023 Newsletter)

12th Day of the Frost Moon, 1217th year, Human Age of Magic ...
My name is Trevor, and I should have kept my mouth shut. As any goblin will tell you, a good idea should not be voiced until all ramifications have been considered. Yet, knowing well that axiom, I could not hold my tongue when no one at the Conference of the Fae Protectorate addressed the elephant in the room--the plethora of Fae artifacts that have come into the hands of humans, and the dangers of not retrieving them before the Protectorate implements its plan to release the Vampire Scourge.
Fool that I am, I should have known that as soon as I brought up the problem, the task of implementing the project to retrieve such artifacts would have been assigned to me.
The Protectorate, under the present direction of the dragon Damocles, is famous for using the term implementing the project as a euphemism for doing all the work.
So, here I am, living among the humans for the next century--thank the gods my mandatory term of service is only 100 years--retrieving as many of the top-priority artifacts as possible until the next poor schmuck--likely a well-intentioned goblin like myself--takes over my post.
It goes without saying I am unhappy with the situation. With the limited manpower and resources I've been given, I expect my task to be arduous. I voiced my complaint to Damocles and was ignored. So, I am determined to document my activities in these diaries as accurately as possible should I need to defend myself for "not living up to expectations" at some time in the future.
Just so you know.
I've made my first entry. I am packed and ready to go. Tomorrow, I make the journey to Arleanne, a human port city on the northern coast of Panprama. From there, I must have faith the gods will guide me.

I'm still taking time off from creative writing while I recover from hip surgery--it's going well but agonizingly slowly! But, as you can see, I'm diving into the world-building phase of my Song of Tsing epic fantasy series. The first book in the series will come out in 2025. In the meantime, I'll keep you up-to-date with blog posts of the Goblin Diaries. For even more, subscribe to my newsletter!

That's all for now. Happy reading!
